United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark, alarming warning about the catastrophic deterioration in the situation in Sudan. He described the ongoing civil war as “spiraling out of control,” posing an urgent threat that could ignite a broader regional calamity unless immediate measures are taken to broker a ceasefire.
Guterres’ ominous words coincide with harrowing reports of widespread atrocities unfolding across the nation, including heartbreaking instances of mass killings and rampant starvation.
The crisis is particularly dire in and around El-Fashir, the last significant city in Darfur that had, until recently, largely evaded the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Recent United Nations assessments conducted in collaboration with numerous non-governmental organizations (NGOs) paint a chilling picture of the humanitarian catastrophe.
These evaluations reveal large-scale displacements of populations fleeing violence, egregious violations of human rights, and a catastrophic collapse of essential services—healthcare, clean water, and access to food are all in peril.
Describing the escalating humanitarian disaster as “a stain on our collective conscience,” Guterres urgently appealed to the warring factions—namely the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces—to engage in negotiations for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
He stressed the crucial need for both parties to ensure safe access to humanitarian aid for the countless vulnerable individuals affected by this brutal conflict and to commit to accountability for violations of international law.
Guterres did not limit his pleas to the internal strife but extended his call to regional and global powers, urging them to “use their influence responsibly.” He highlighted that the relentless flow of weapons and political backing to the rival factions is exacerbating the conflict, which has already forced millions to flee their homes, with multiple areas teetering on the brink of famine.
Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Guterres warned that without swift and decisive intervention, Sudan could descend into “one of the worst humanitarian disasters of the century.” He underscored that the repercussions would not only engulf Sudan but would also jeopardize the stability of neighboring nations, further destabilizing an already volatile region.
This monumental crisis demands coordinated efforts by the international community to restore peace and safeguard the lives of millions hanging in the balance.
