Tanzania’s Hassan Declared Landslide Election Winner Amid Unrest

Share

Tanzania’s electoral commission has proclaimed President Samia Suluhu Hascountry’s overwhelming victor of the nation’s general election held on October 29, 2025, capturing an astonishing 97.66% of the votes cast. However, this significant declaration arrives amid considerable unrest and alarming allegations of electoral misconduct.

Opposition groups and numerous civil society organizations have strongly condemned the electoral process, denouncing it as fundamentally flawed and lacking fairness. Key opposition figures were conspicuously barred from participating in the elections, sparking grave concerns about the integrity of the democratic process. Eyewitness accounts reveal that the ruling party employed a range of intimidation tactics aimed at stifling dissent, including the harassment of opposition candidates and the enforcement of stringent restrictions on public gatherings and independent media reporting.

In the wake of the election announcement, large-scale protests erupted in major urban centers such as Dar es Salaam, A “usha, and Mwanza. These demonstrations, sparked by a profound sense of betrayal and a demand for electoral justice, met with a heavy-handed response from security forces.

Tragically, the clashes have resulted in fatalities and numerous arrests, further intensifying the national crisis.

International observers have voiced serious concerns over the glaring lack of transparency surrounding the electoral process. They highlight critical issues, including inadequate voter access, suppression of independent journalism, and manipulation of the media narrative.

The excessive use of force against peaceful protesters has drawn widespread condemnation, with observers urging Tanzanian authorities to embrace accountability and engage in meaningful dialogue with opposition leaders.

Amidst this turmoil, President Hassan—who rose to power in early 2021 following the death of her predecessor, John Magufuli—has framed the election results as a “victory for stability and continuity.” She asserts that her administration’s dedication to progress, development, and national unity deserves recognition, even as she grapples with formidable challenges from inside the political landscape and mounting public dissent.
