Botswana is currently facing an unprecedented crisis as it grapples with severe flooding resulting from relentless and intense rainfall that has wreaked havoc across the nation. These torrential downpours have disrupted daily life, instigating profound concern among citizens. In a decisive move aimed at safeguarding the well-being of students and addressing the staggering transportation challenges created by impassable roads, the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education has announced the temporary closure of all schools from February 20 to February 24, 2025.

The deluge has unleashed widespread flash flooding, with catastrophic effects in key regions such as Ghanzi, Gaborone, and Francistown. In Gaborone, the capital city, local dam levels have soared to a critical 90% capacity, raising urgent fears of imminent overflow that could compound residents’ suffering and threaten their homes.

Tragically, this natural disaster has claimed the lives of seven individuals and displaced thousands more. Reports indicate that over 1,700 people have been evacuated from the hardest-hit regions, with many seeking refuge in designated evacuation centers designed to provide essential necessities and critical support. These centers stand as a testament to the remarkable resilience of the community in the face of such adversity.

In response to this escalating humanitarian crisis, the government has activated the National Emergency Operation Centre, along with 31 District Emergency Operation Centres, to coordinate relief efforts effectively. The Botswana Meteorological Services have issued urgent warnings of continued heavy rainfall throughout the week. Forecasts suggest cumulative rainfall amounts could exceed 50 mm in several regions within the next 24 hours. This alarming prediction only amplifies the risks of further flooding, heightening anxiety among local populations.

Authorities call on residents, especially those in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to all safety guidelines. The community must unite and cooperate with emergency services during this critical time, as collective action is paramount in managing the additional risks of these extreme weather conditions.
