Share

Djibouti’s seasoned diplomat Mahamoud Ali Youssouf has officially taken office as Chair of the African Union (AU) Commission, following a closely contested seven-round secret-ballot election held in February.

Known for his diplomatic finesse and deep experience in regional affairs, Youssouf’s appointment marks a new chapter for the AU as it navigates complex challenges ranging from security crises to economic integration.

Youssouf previously served as Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and is widely respected for his role in regional mediation efforts and his advocacy for pan-African cooperation. His leadership comes at a critical time for the continent, with mounting calls for institutional reform and a more assertive AU presence on global issues.

In his inaugural address, Youssouf pledged to prioritize peacebuilding, economic integration, and youth empowerment, while calling for greater unity among member states:
“Africa must speak with one voice and act with shared purpose if we are to shape our destiny in a fast-changing world.”

His appointment has been welcomed by leaders across the continent, who view his diplomatic skillset as key to reinvigorating the AU’s mission in the years ahead.
