The first tragedy unfolded in the remote Basankusu Territory, nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of Équateur Province. Here, a passenger vessel, burdened with students returning from an educational event, tragically capsized amid the tumultuous waters of the Congo River.

Eyewitnesses have shared harrowing accounts of panic and despair, revealing that the boat was grotesquely overcrowded—well beyond its intended capacity—and shockingly devoid of essential safety measures.
