Share

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has made a transformative commitment of $500 million to support Ethiopia’s ambitious initiative to construct a cutting-edge airport near the town of Bishoftu. Once completed, this visionary project is set to become the largest airport in Africa, with the potential to dramatically reshape the continent’s aviation landscape.

With an estimated total investment of around $10 billion, the new airport is being meticulously crafted to accommodate an astounding capacity of up to 100 million passengers annually.

This significant expansion of aviation infrastructure not only aims to meet the surging demand for air travel but also strategically positions Ethiopia as a pivotal hub in the global aviation network.

Ethiopian Airlines, the nation’s flagship carrier, is poised to play a vital role in this transformative endeavor, pledging to contribute 20% of the total funding.

The remainder of the financing will come from a diverse coalition of international creditors, reflecting a robust confidence in the project’s viability and its potential for success.

Upon its grand inauguration, the new airport is expected to be a catalyst for profound economic growth, invigorating tourism, enhancing trade connectivity, and generating thousands of job opportunities.

This landmark initiative encapsulates Ethiopia’s visionary goal of elevating its aviation capabilities and solidifying its status as a key player in both African and international air travel, paving the way for a brighter, more prosperous future for the nation.
