Somalia takes seat on UN Security Council for first time in decades

Somalia has begun a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, its first participation since the 1970s. This marks an important step for a nation that has faced decades of instability and conflict.

From 2026 to 2027, Somalia aims to rebuild its institutions after a long civil war and ongoing insecurity, primarily due to the al-Shabab insurgency. Membership in the Security Council provides international recognition and highlights Somalia’s commitment to global diplomacy.

As a member, Somalia will engage in discussions on global peace and security, focusing on conflict prevention, sanctions, peacekeeping, and responses to humanitarian crises. Its presence may draw more attention to security issues in Africa, particularly in the Horn of Africa, Sudan, and the Sahel.

However, this role comes with significant responsibilities. Somalia will need to manage its domestic challenges while participating actively in the Council, balancing local issues with its international obligations to succeed effectively.
